I don’t think they say that to all the moms. Really. Again and again when we pick up our Isaac from the day care, they gush about how well-behaved and friendly he is. And this in the middle of disequilibrium!

Daddy’s co-workers gush that he’s so confident and unafraid. Grandpa relishes that he listens. Grandma giggles that he’s such a helper. Aunties enjoy his heary appetite.

I’d love to take credit. That the bond we have forged keeps him grounded and happy. The dietary changes keep him on an even keel. The attachment makes him independent.

But I can’t help but think that all we’re doing is watering and fertilizing an already lovely little sprout. God made him happy and friendly and delightful. We’re just trying to not get in the way.
