Sto lat, Gavin!

Our Gavin is about to be 6 months old. We celebrated with a sweet potato party with Grandpa and Grandma Kaminski. Our first taste of solids! Yummy. And we sang our blessings and good wishes in Polish too. In case you’re needing a glimpse of this Kaminski custom, check out Isaac’s version.

2006 is the new 1984

When Matt Lauer announced this morning that “40 is the new 20,” I admit that I grinned in satisfaction. Ah. . . . then my 38 is the new 18, right? Is 18 the new first trimester?

Apparently, while visiting India, Gloria Vanderbilt commented that “Pink is the new black,” and the phrase has blossomed from there. So I gathered other “this is the new that” phrases.

Other new-s I’m proposing now:

  • Chocolate is the new carrots.
  • Westies are the new retrievers.
  • Blogging is the new Sominex.
  • Picard is the new Darmok.
  • Metaphor is the new rhetoric.
  • Elmo is the new Seinfeld.
  • Babies are the new people.
  • Dollywood is the new Disney World.
  • South Carolina is the new Michigan.
  • New Mexico is the new Mexico.
  • Ph.D.s are the new cool.
  • Isaac is the new big brother.

And we can’t forget:

  • War is the new peace.
  • Freedom is the new slavery.
  • Ignorance is the new strength.

Technology boosts worship at Springwell church

The local paper brags about this church around the corner.

Flat-screen televisions, stage lighting and state-of-the-art sound systems greet visitors at Taylors’ Springwell Church, tipping them off that this place of worship isn’t a traditional one. This media-savvy church stays at the forefront of technology by the guiding hand of Sonny Gray, media and communications director.

Hmph. That something so artificial can “boost” worship. Our poor forebears. All they had was a Bible, their untrained voices, and prayer. Tsk-tsk. Well, and the Spirit. But where was the laser pointer?

A recent Springwell sermon foregrounds the classic Keswick mindset of the abundant life. It’s so twisted. This is contemporary Christianity. This is deviant. Instead of lambasting devil chords and drum sets, we need to see this mindset for what it is: works-based righteousness.

Somebody needs to nail another 95 Theses to the door.

V is for Violin

ViolinWe were honored to learn about V and Violins from a few Virtuousos. A mommy friend and her daughters showed us their tenth-size violin and cellos while we heard “Twinkle, Twinkle” and other songs. Gavin wanted to join in, and Isaac just soaked in the whole experience while we sat on the piano bench. We get to remember the event with this pic in front of the Virtuouso’s brother’s lino-cut. Hurray for V!

Headlines

One of my life’s goals is to get a submission on Jay Leno’s Headlines. I tried once with a junk mail ad for a laser removal business. It had a pic of a man who had lasered off his back hair in the shape of a heart. It didn’t make it. Soon after I saw a headline from our local paper on the show. Doh! I missed it. Probably because I don’t get the paper.

But I sense that there’s some potential in this catalog I received this afternoon. Yes. Definite potential.

Remembering

We all remember in our own way. Isaac’s way is very two.

Shall we gather at the river?

A few weeks after 9/11, Thomas Hampson sang this hymn in Charlotte, NC in honor of those we lost on that horrible day. I couldn’t stop thinking of our Elise and felt like the whole world was crying with just me on that day. The nation was saying the same things we were saying: “This was so unexpected.” “Things’ll never be the same.” “We lost our innocence.”

Shall we gather at the river,
Where bright angel feet have trod,
With its crystal tide forever
Flowing by the throne of God?

Yes, we’ll gather at the river,
The beautiful, the beautiful river;
Gather with the saints at the river
That flows by the throne of God.

On the margin of the river,
Washing up its silver spray,
We will talk and worship ever,
All the happy golden day.

Ere we reach the shining river,
Lay we every burden down;
Grace our spirits will deliver,
And provide a robe and crown.

At the smiling of the river,
Mirror of the Savior’s face,
Saints, whom death will never sever,
Lift their songs of saving grace.

Soon we’ll reach the silver river,
Soon our pilgrimage will cease;
Soon our happy hearts will quiver
With the melody of peace.

Saints, whom death will never sever, lift their songs of saving grace. Amen.

Sock it to me.

Um. . . . Do they not have other kinds of soft goods for their clothes in Minnesota?

Trains and Umbrellas and Such

Trains, trains, trains — could T be any luckier? We made our own Train out of gift boxes, string, and smiley stickers for wheels. It puffs around the kitchen counter, “Choo, choo!”

For U, we’ve had an Umbrella party. There we sat in the living room with all available Umbrellas open and in Use, prepared for the Uneventful downpour.

Many changes around here. Potty usage is up, and Gavin has really taken to sitting in the highchair for dinner while gumming ice cubes through a mesh feeder. While he asks to go Trick-or-Treating every night, Isaac has finally decided that Woody is his choice for a Halloween costume. Mommy, after counting all the dog costumes in the closet, thought that all should dress as dogs (including the dog) with Daddy impersonating Cesar Millan as leader of the pack. But now Isaac wants Sugar to be Buzz Lightyear. Strangely enough, they do have a Buzz costume for dogs. Who da thunk it?
