The Covenant Child
Still learning about this one. . . . but it just makes sense in the light of the whole of Scripture.

It does make sense in the light of Scripture as a whole. If the covenant child should be evangelized, then the sacrament of baptism is basically a ritual and nothing more, IMO. Where I run into a brick wall is that this line of reasoning can lead to a compelling case for paedocommunion. I’m not in favor of that, but why? I would say more but I could be going into the ordination process at anytime. I wouldn’t want to say anything in a blog that could come back to haunt me. I’ve heard that kind of thing could happen :) If you reach any conclusions, let me know.
Of more immediate concern is the influence this has on disciplining children. (Honestly, I’m of a somewhat different position than you and Grant. But I highly respect your views and do agree to a significant extent.) I think that God’s goal in dealing with sin in the life of his children is different than it is otherwise. If we believe that baptism is significant because God gives faith even in the womb (Ps. 22:10), then we ought to deal with our children’s sin as our heavenly Father deals with ours. It seems a bit inconsistent to say that children need to be evangelized and then try to father or mother them after God’s example with his children.

Alright, alright already! I’m Presbyterian. I admit it!
