I first realized that Patriarchy fit what I had observed at BJU when I read about 17th-century English families.
These families had a strict structure that could not be altered. Think Downton Abbey, if you need a familiar example.
The Lord of the Manor holds all the power. He is the one who goes out into the dog-eat-dog world to fight for his kith and kin. He battles for himself really. This family is just an extension of him.
