{"id":2134,"date":"2009-09-01T08:00:50","date_gmt":"2009-09-01T12:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.drslewis.org\/camille\/?p=2134"},"modified":"2009-09-01T08:00:50","modified_gmt":"2009-09-01T12:00:50","slug":"watching-a-tennis-match","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.drslewis.org\/camille\/2009\/09\/01\/watching-a-tennis-match\/","title":{"rendered":"Watching a Tennis Match"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What a strange bunch of contrasts.<\/p>\n<p>We took my youngest to the hospital for grunting-while-breathing, and within 24-hours after the IV antibiotics he was playing &#8220;Punch Out&#8221; with the Get Well balloon my parents brought him.<\/p>\n<p>That hospital trip &#8212; like any other, I&#8217;m sure &#8212; moved from soul-sucking boredom to tearful panic. And during that ebb and flow, I got two emails. One explained what a rapturous &#8220;blessing&#8221; it was that God took me away from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bju.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\">BJU<\/a> since I could no longer ruin young lives like I had so clearly done for <em>years<\/em>. :\/ The other email described an <em>actual<\/em> blessing &#8212; how God is using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drslewis.org\/camille\/2009\/08\/happy-5th-8th-birthday-elise\/\" target=\"_blank\">Elise&#8217;s little cherry dress<\/a> to show a young, nearly-forgotten girl how much He loved her.<\/p>\n<p>A lengthy conversation with a young man wrestling with his fundamentalist upbringing made me realize that fundamentalism doesn&#8217;t teach progressive justification (like Roman Catholicism). Nor does it teach progressive sanctification (which it ironically calls &#8220;perfectionism). It teaches a kind of <em>perpetual <\/em>justification. That you have to continually beg for salvation or risk certain doom.<\/p>\n<p>I found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sermonaudio.com\/sermoninfo.asp?SID=91008932203\" target=\"_blank\">last year&#8217;s Opening Evangelistic Service<\/a> from BJU. Go listen to it. It&#8217;s a perfect encapsulation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drslewis.org\/camille\/ebenezers\/\" target=\"_blank\">everything Grant and I stood up against and were forced to resign over<\/a>. It&#8217;s all right there. Nothing&#8217;s changed. I&#8217;m told that the dorm room leaders had to do damage control for months after that sermon.<\/p>\n<p>And while I was still reeling over that <span>slipshod<\/span> retelling of the Prodigal Son parable, an old friend pointed me to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldmag.com\/podcast\/marvinolasky.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">WorldMag&#8217;s recent podcast on the same parable<\/a> &#8212; &#8220;Becoming the Third Brother.&#8221; Listen to Marvin Olasky&#8217;s description of the Elder Brother in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldmag.com\/podcast\/episode.mp3?episode=42&amp;download=true\" target=\"_blank\">the second part<\/a>. Sound familiar?<\/p>\n<p>Of course, BJU got a mention in Forbes list of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/lists\/2009\/94\/colleges-09_Bob-Jones-University_94571.html\" target=\"_blank\">best colleges based on student satisfaction<\/a>. #279. North Greenville is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/lists\/2009\/94\/colleges-09_North-Greenville-University_94585.html\" target=\"_blank\">#154<\/a> and has record enrollment this year in <em>this <\/em>economy! <a href=\"http:\/\/men.style.com\/gq\/features\/slideshow\/v\/0909COLLEGE?loop=0&amp;slideshowId=slideshow60220&amp;iphoto=19&amp;nphoto=25&amp;play=false&amp;cnt=1\" target=\"_blank\">GQ listed BJU, too, but for a more dubious honor<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I found this little chestnut &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stufffundieslike.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Stuff Fundies Like<\/a>. Every post is brilliant and therapeutic and hilarious. I bet you can&#8217;t read just one!<\/p>\n<p>I made a Facebook quiz &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/apps.facebook.com\/howfundamentyczatu\/\" target=\"_blank\">How Fundamentalist Are You?<\/a>&#8221; I&#8217;m told it&#8217;s too feminine, and that&#8217;s probably true. It has one (pretty negative) review. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/apps\/application.php?id=141237466030&amp;v=wall&amp;viewas=6858518&amp;ref=ts#\/apps\/application.php?id=141237466030&amp;v=app_6261817190\" target=\"_blank\">Check it out<\/a> too.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m on my second read through Steve Brown&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.keylife.org\/index.php?page=shop.product_details&amp;flypage=shop.flypage_kln&amp;product_id=93&amp;category_id=8&amp;manufacturer_id=0&amp;option=com_virtuemart&amp;Itemid=1&amp;vmcchk=1&amp;Itemid=1\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Scandalous Freedom<\/em><\/a>. Here are <a href=\"http:\/\/drop.io\/PerfectionWeShare\" target=\"_blank\">the most important chapters<\/a> for recovering fundamentalists. Take a look. And if listening is more your cup of tea, <a href=\"http:\/\/stevebrownetc.com\/category\/podcasts\/scandalous-freedom\/\" target=\"_blank\">here are the podcasts<\/a>.
