Really. I&#8217;ve been trying to get a bead on that time period for awhile. That same anxiety that we&#8217;re all feeling in the air right now in the US, I think people were feeling back then too. And the seeds of our own undoing were planted then. Here are some facts I&#8217;ve gathered:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Thomas Nelson released its second edition of the<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Revised_Standard_Version\" target=\"_blank\"> Revised Standard Version<\/a> in 1952, this time including the Old Testament. To religious conservatives, the translators were pretty sloppy, seeming to highlight contradictions between the Old and New Testaments.<\/li>\n<li>The first conservative evangelical Christian school started in 1952 down in Florida &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.keswickchristian.org\/keswick\/welcome.php\" target=\"_blank\">Keswick Christian School<\/a>. One of its alumni wrote about her experience in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/My-Fundamentalist-Education-Memoir-Girlhood\/dp\/1586482580\" target=\"_blank\"><em>My Fundamentalist Education<\/em><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>In 1952 and 1953, the U.S. experienced an outbreak of 58,000 and 35,000 polio cases, respectively, up from a typical number of some 20,000 cases a year.<\/li>\n<li>President Eisenhower started <a href=\"http:\/\/www.presidency.ucsb.edu\/ws\/index.php?pid=10414\" target=\"_blank\">the &#8220;Back to God&#8221; campaign<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Joseph_McCarthy#The_Army-McCarthy_hearings\" target=\"_self\">Army-McCarthy hearings<\/a> were just starting in 1953.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Post-World_War_II_baby_boom\" target=\"_blank\">The babies were still booming<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><em>I Love Lucy <\/em>was in its <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1952_in_television#Debuts\" target=\"_blank\">second season<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Korean_war\" target=\"_blank\">The Korean War<\/a> continued as a hotter part of the ongoing Cold War.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pledge_of_allegiance#Addition_of_the_words_.22under_God.22\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Under God&#8221; was added to the Pledge of Allegiance<\/a>, thanks to the efforts of the Knights of Columbus, appealing to a newly-baptized Eisenhower.<\/li>\n<li>The Supreme Court heard <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zorach_v._Clauson\" target=\"_blank\">Zorach v. Clauson<\/a>, and released-time religious instruction diminished after that.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Benjamin_Spock#Books\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Spock<\/a> dominated the parenting-advice market.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And that&#8217;s the way it was . . . back in those blissful 1950s.
