1<\/sup> What’s God going to say to my questions? I’m braced for the worst. I’ll climb to the lookout tower and scan the horizon.
\nI’ll wait to see what God says,
\nhow he’ll answer my complaint.<\/p>\n

2-3<\/sup>And then God answered: “Write this.
\nWrite what you see.
\nWrite it out in big block letters
\nso that it can be read on the run.
\nThis vision-message is a witness
\npointing to what’s coming.
\nIt aches for the coming\u2014it can hardly wait!
\nAnd it doesn’t lie.
\nIf it seems slow in coming, wait.
\nIt’s on its way. It will come right on time.<\/p>\n

4<\/sup>“Look at that man, bloated by self-importance\u2014
\nfull of himself but soul-empty.
\nBut the person in right standing before God
\nthrough loyal and steady believing
\nis fully alive, really alive.<\/p>\n

5-6<\/sup>“Note well: Money deceives.
\nThe arrogant rich don’t last.
\nThey are more hungry for wealth
\nthan the grave is for cadavers.
\nLike death, they always want more,
\nbut the ‘more’ they get is dead bodies.
\nThey are cemeteries filled with dead nations,
\ngraveyards filled with corpses.
\nDon’t give people like this a second thought.
\nSoon the whole world will be taunting them:<\/p>\n

6-8<\/sup>“‘Who do you think you are\u2014
\ngetting rich by stealing and extortion?
\nHow long do you think
\nyou can get away with this?’
\nIndeed, how long before your victims wake up,
\nstand up and make you the victim?
\nYou’ve plundered nation after nation.
\nNow you’ll get a taste of your own medicine.
\nAll the survivors are out to plunder you,
\na payback for all your murders and massacres.<\/p>\n

9-11<\/sup>“Who do you think you are\u2014
\nrecklessly grabbing and looting,
\nLiving it up, acting like king of the mountain,
\nacting above it all, above trials and troubles?
\nYou’ve engineered the ruin of your own house.
\nIn ruining others you’ve ruined yourself.
\nYou’ve undermined your foundations,
\nrotted out your own soul.
\nThe bricks of your house will speak up and accuse you.
\nThe woodwork will step forward with evidence.<\/p>\n

12-14<\/sup>“Who do you think you are\u2014
\nbuilding a town by murder, a city with crime?
\nDon’t you know that God-of-the-Angel-Armies
\nmakes sure nothing comes of that but ashes,
\nMakes sure the harder you work
\nat that kind of thing, the less you are?
\nMeanwhile the earth fills up
\nwith awareness of God’s glory
\nas the waters cover the sea.<\/p>\n

15-17<\/sup>“Who do you think you are\u2014
\ninviting your neighbors to your drunken parties,
\nGiving them too much to drink,
\nroping them into your sexual orgies?
\nYou thought you were having the time of your life.
\nWrong! It’s a time of disgrace.
\nAll the time you were drinking,
\nyou were drinking from the cup of God’s wrath.
\nYou’ll wake up holding your throbbing head, hung over\u2014
\nhung over from Lebanon violence,
\nHung over from animal massacres,
\nhung over from murder and mayhem,
\nFrom multiple violations
\nof place and people.<\/p>\n

18-19<\/sup>“What’s the use of a carved god
\nso skillfully carved by its sculptor?
\nWhat good is a fancy cast god
\nwhen all it tells is lies?
\nWhat sense does it make to be a pious god-maker
\nwho makes gods that can’t even talk?
\nWho do you think you are\u2014
\nsaying to a stick of wood, ‘Wake up,’
\nOr to a dumb stone, ‘Get up’?
\nCan they teach you anything about anything?
\nThere’s nothing to them but surface.
\nThere’s nothing on the inside.<\/p>\n
