{"id":4711,"date":"2014-05-06T08:00:16","date_gmt":"2014-05-06T12:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.drslewis.org\/camille\/?p=4711"},"modified":"2014-05-06T07:46:23","modified_gmt":"2014-05-06T11:46:23","slug":"tuesday-peace-came-from-above","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.drslewis.org\/camille\/2014\/05\/06\/tuesday-peace-came-from-above\/","title":{"rendered":"Tuesday peace came from above"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/embed.spotify.com\/?uri=spotify:track:2RUViuZ4ypMvHUydXBrhzZ\" width=\"300\" height=\"380\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drslewis.org\/camille\/2014\/05\/05\/on-monday-he-gave-me-the-gift-of-love\/\">My testimony<\/a> was the only\u00a0document I prepared that\u00a0was read, delivered, and tested in the March 2013 interview process for teaching as an adjunct professor in Mass Communication at North Greenville University. While my more Presbyterian covenantal vocabulary was met with skepticism, my Baptist-ese was proven sufficient for the 6-hours a semester. &#8220;Well, you go to a good church, I guess,&#8221; was the final conclusion.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/02\/12\/education\/christian-school-faulted-for-halting-abuse-study.html?_r=0\">The New York Times article<\/a> published on February 12th, 2014 and I interviewed with <a href=\"http:\/\/prospect.org\/article\/next-christian-sex-abuse-scandal\">the American Prospect<\/a> on Tuesday, February 25th. Sometime between those two dates, however, the phone lines were hot between <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bju.edu\/\">29614<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ngu.edu\/\">29688<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On February 27, I was scheduled for a 1:30 meeting with my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ngu.edu\/\">North Greenville University<\/a> supervisor, Linwood Hagin, to discuss my student evaluations from the previous semester. My scores were very high overall, with a few critiques about my unfamiliarity with campus procedures (such is the life of a new adjunct) and one correct but irrelevant observation that I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drslewis.org\/camille\/my-politics-from-scarlet-to-indigo\/\">lean left politically<\/a>. I had written out my assessment of those observations and gave the usual kinds of proposals to improve. Linwood and I discussed those things as any first-semester adjunct and supervisor would. We talked primarily about Blackboard, an educational software package that I had yet to integrate into my curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>And then the discussion <em>turned<\/em>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drslewis.org\/camille\/2008\/03\/13\/ebenezer-the-ultimatum\/\">It was a feeling I knew quite well<\/a>. I knew it so well that I had to stifle a giggle.\u00a0Maybe Bob Jones University did teach me a thing or two about how to live.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow I have to bring up something unfortunate.\u201d Linwood previewed.<\/p>\n<p>I smiled broadly, feeling confident within a sense of doom. It was a good feeling, to be honest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone from another university in town called the NGU administration and said that you had been making comments about that university, and the NGU administration would like for you to not speak about the controversy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, I knew what that meant, but I was mystified by the ambiguity. Why equivocate? Why play games with phrases such as &#8220;another university in town.&#8221; If you don\u2019t want me to do something, you need to tell me explicitly what it is you don\u2019t want me to do. I was familiar with this code, so calling from my muscle memory, I carried on.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d I asked.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay out of the controversy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I knew that I had to focus\u00a0on specifics, again a familiar feeling. I even remembered the script from before.\u00a0<em>\u201cYes, I understand. But I need to know the boundaries here. What does that mean?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201c. . . . Stay out of the controversy,&#8221; he repeated<\/p>\n<p>Specifics were clearly not forthcoming.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cNow, I know I was in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/02\/12\/education\/christian-school-faulted-for-halting-abuse-study.html?_r=0\">the New York Times<\/a>\u00a0<\/em><em>. . . .&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Flustered, Linwood reacted with \u201cWhat? I didn\u2019t know that. No, no, no. <em>The New York Times<\/em>? What?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I continued, <em>\u201cI know I was in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/02\/12\/education\/christian-school-faulted-for-halting-abuse-study.html?_r=0\">the New York Times<\/a><\/em><em>, but I\u2019ve been exceptionally careful not to ever mention NGU in my interviews with the media.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay, okay. . . . It was Bob Jones University,&#8221; he finally admitted.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cRight. I\u2019m not surprised that they would do this. They\u2019ve attacked me at my church, they\u2019ve targeted my kids at school, so of course they would come here. In fact, I was going to come to you last semester about their public accusations that I was guilty of federal crimes . . . .\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat? No. No, no. No.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cRight. It was completely false. But this is how they work.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, NGU\u00a0is a private institution and so we have no promise of . . . .\u201d he trailed off.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t need to hear more.\u00a0<em>\u201cI will talk to Dr. Pannell.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, apparently, you\u2019ve made some statements in social media.\u201d he peered over his nonexistent glasses at me.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI know quite well what I\u2019ve said on social media. Like I\u2019ve said, I\u2019m not surprised they would try this tactic. This is what they do. I\u2019ll talk to Dr. Pannell.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I thanked him and brought the focus\u00a0back to the earlier conclusion\u00a0of the meeting: Blackboard. <em>\u201cAnd I\u2019ll look into Blackboard . . . .\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, that\u2019d be good . . . .<strong><em> IF<\/em><\/strong> you\u2019re working here next year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Well.
