The students didn&#8217;t know <a title=\"Everything\u2019s not fine.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.drslewis.org\/camille\/2014\/09\/10\/everythings-not-fine\/\">why<\/a>, of course. They were duly impressed by his presence. A <em>governor<\/em>, and a <em>conservative<\/em> one at that! Talking to <em>them<\/em>. What an important school\u00a0this must be to have the former executive\u00a0of the great state of Alabama come to speak as an every-day event. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drslewis.org\/camille\/2014\/09\/03\/everythings-better-than-fine\/\">Everything must be fine<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drslewis.org\/camille\/2014\/08\/27\/everything-was-just-fine\/\">right<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>The Governor\u00a0asked to start that Monday\u00a0chapel with &#8220;Let the Lower Lights Be Burning,&#8221; a song that by 1933 was pretty old-timey &#8212; a hymn even the students&#8217; grandparents\u00a0would have considered a bit worn. So\u00a0the tone was already sentimental and the students were already focused on\u00a0the venerable speaker. Like every successful political speech, Graves&#8217;\u00a0compliments\u00a0came fast. The BJC students had always impressed him, he said, as being the keepers of &#8220;the lights along the shore.&#8221; This dark world needed more &#8220;lighthouse keepers,&#8221; he said, like these fine 100% American young people. <em>They<\/em>\u00a0would never shirk their duty in shining &#8220;the true light of the Gospel, so that the weary soul sailing life&#8217;s sea might reach the Heavenly Port in safety.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Lovely words for a politician.<\/p>\n<p>That was Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The next Sunday would come the news: <a title=\"Everything\u2019s not fine.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.drslewis.org\/camille\/2014\/09\/10\/everythings-not-fine\/\">Bob Jones College is bankrupt<\/a>. They were special. They were needed. They were strong. They were unique among all the others because they were dependable &#8220;lighthouse keepers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bob Jones Sr. would distribute\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ge.tt\/9TMZGEx1\/v\/0\">the entire announcement in pamphlet form<\/a> as well.<\/p>\n<p>Tune in when\u00a0governors hand\u00a0out\u00a0compliments too freely. I think <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Virgil\">Virgil<\/a> might say today, beware of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nikki_Haley#Early_life.2C_education.2C_and_business_career\">Sikhs<\/a> bearing gifts.
