I&#8217;m having trouble being its cheerleader. I read about the <a title=\"Luther v Erasmus\" href=\"http:\/\/www.prca.org\/prtj\/nov95b.html\" target=\"_blank\">conflict<\/a> between <a title=\"On Free Will\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Discourse-Milestones-Thought-History-Ideas\/dp\/0804461406\" target=\"_blank\">Erasmus<\/a> (<a title=\"On Copia\" href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?sourceid=navclient&#038;ie=UTF-8&#038;rls=GGIH,GGIH:2007-02,GGIH:en&#038;q=%22On+Copia+of+Words+and+Ideas%22\" target=\"_blank\">the great style guru<\/a> and the <a title=\"Semi-pelagian\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Semipelagianism\" target=\"_blank\">semi-Pelagian<\/a>) and <a title=\"On the Bondage of the Will\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ccel.org\/ccel\/luther\/bondage.html\" target=\"_blank\">Luther<\/a> (far from stylish and Mr. <em>Sola Fide<\/em> himself) and think, &#8220;See &#8212; look at that. See where rhetoric got Erasmus? Sure &#8212; he was smooth and beautiful &#8212; <a title=\"Rhetoric is Truth's wardrobe.\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rhetoric#Rhetoric_from_the_Renaissance_to_the_Enlightenment\" target=\"_blank\">dressing truth in beautiful clothing<\/a>. But maybe that garb was hiding the truth. Maybe rhetoric was its shroud, not its complement?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not saying that I&#8217;m gonna chuck Cicero in the trash. And this is far from <a title=\"The Phaedrus\" href=\"http:\/\/classics.mit.edu\/Plato\/phaedrus.html\" target=\"_blank\">that pagan Platonic vent about rhetoric<\/a>! But <a title=\"Ephesians 4\" href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?book_id=56&#038;chapter=4&#038;version=47\" target=\"_blank\">the near-foolish boldness that I hear Paul encouraging from the Ephesians<\/a> doesn&#8217;t seem to fit with what I read in Quintillian.<\/p>\n<p>I think believing &#8220;wisdom&#8221; (the ancient study of rhetoric) looks more klutzy than we&#8217;d like to admit. When you know God is ever-present in every audience, maybe that changes your style. It&#8217;s not just transparent. Maybe I&#8217;m just noodling the differences between the continuous tension between the prophet and the sage.<\/p>\n<p>I still have my Solomon, James, Augustine, <a title=\"de Pisan\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Christine_de_Pisan\" target=\"_blank\">de Pisan<\/a>, <a title=\"Vico\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Giambattista_Vico\" target=\"_blank\">Vico<\/a>, <a title=\"George Campbell\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Campbell_%28Presbyterian_minister%29\" target=\"_blank\">Campbell<\/a>, and <a title=\"Bahktin\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mikhail_Bakhtin\" target=\"_blank\">Bahktin<\/a> &#8212; my friends in the faith and in the discipline. But when being &#8220;rhetorically sensitive&#8221; becomes a club, I&#8217;m just not so sure.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What I&#8217;m about to say sounds very much not like a rhetorician.
