In the Winter of 1917, world peace was still a year away. While troops sent home Christmas greetings from fox holes and hospitals<\/a>, America’s Poet Laureate Carl Sandburg noted the sadistic contrast of young men dying in the snow while an entitled and demagogic Kaiser<\/a> (Or the czar. Literary historians are not sure) dreams of his big-league winning. So much winning.\u00a0\"\"<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

To 2018. May we build the same peace our great-greats worked so hard to create.<\/em><\/p>\n

Christmas Cartoon, 1917<\/h2>\n

A window frames a picture:<\/strong>
\nTen men crawl on snow,<\/strong>
\nUnder the wind.<\/strong>
\nUnder the needles and knives of wind<\/strong>
\nPiling the snow in changing curves,<\/strong>
\nTen men on their bellies <\/strong>
\nTen red zigzags,<\/strong>
\nUnder the shoveling winds.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The man at the window eats bread with cow’s butter<\/strong>
\nand mutters a throaty guttural:<\/strong>
\nI am the king of the land and it is all mine.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Between mouthfuls in the late dawn, in the shiver of<\/strong>
\nneedles and knives outside, he speaks to his heart,<\/strong>
\nHe dozes in a dream:<\/strong>
\nI am the king of the land and it is all mine.<\/strong><\/h3>\n
