Of course, I now realize my Catholic friends and my mainline liberal Protestant friends agree with the same fundamentals, so that&#8217;s not really what it is at all. Most of that is just being <strong><em>o<\/em><\/strong>rthodox.<\/p>\n<p>Fundamentalism is about <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/blueletterbible.org\/faq\/mill.html#dmil\" title=\"Strict literal\">a particular read on the Bible<\/a>. An <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dispensationalism\" title=\"Dispensationalism\">arcane view of the future<\/a>. A <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=0JdHnY963bAC&amp;pg=PA21&amp;lpg=PA21&amp;dq=%22he+that+is+spiritual%22&amp;source=web&amp;ots=Ghk9CueaFk&amp;sig=3Cx2ppBLNyePdLClk1tYsSTC6dY#PPA3,M1\" title=\"He That Is Spiritual\">very specific Gnostic view on (even redeemed) humanity<\/a>. A <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.christianbook.com\/Christian\/Books\/product?event=AFF&amp;p=1011693&amp;item_no=08777\" title=\"Balancing the Christian Life\">nihilistic hopelessness to the Christian walk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And, of course, separation. It really is all about separation. Fundies try desperately to look separated but not totally irrelevant to the world. They want to be seen as both godly and significant. And their attempts miss the point.<\/p>\n<p>We aren&#8217;t supposed to be separate. We are <em>made<\/em> separate. Or set apart. Or sanctified. Or <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/cf.blueletterbible.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=G37&amp;Version=kjv\" title=\"hagiaz\u014d\">holy<\/a>. It&#8217;s an act of God, not a short hair cut.<\/p>\n<p>Trying to look separated is like forming a Barbie doll&#8217;s foot to look ready to walk in high-heeled shoes. It&#8217;s missing the point. She&#8217;s just a hunk of lifeless plastic with a freakishly perfect form. A <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/mwt\/feature\/1997\/11\/26harlot.html\" title=\"Lilli, Barbie's Older Sister\">play thing<\/a>.
