But there&#8217;s more to it than just that. That&#8217;s not telling the whole story.<\/p>\n<p>Fundamentalism bifurcates all of life. Everything is forced into an either-or. These dichotomies are not just false in the cosmic sense. They are false to everyone outside of their boundaries. If you&#8217;re not conversant in their own reasoning, it&#8217;s nothing short of baffling. These act as rhetorical boundary markers to determine if you&#8217;re in or out of the subculture. A few I&#8217;ve heard:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?sourceid=navclient&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;rls=GGIH,GGIH:2007-02,GGIH:en&amp;q=%22Just+two+choices+on+the+shelf%2c+pleasing+God+or+pleasing+self%22\">Just two choices on the shelf, pleasing God or pleasing self<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Either <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Irresistible_grace\" title=\"TULIP\">Grace is irresistible<\/a> and missions is irrelevant, or Grace is resistible and missions is paramount.<\/li>\n<li>Either you <em>let<\/em> God be Lord of your\u00a0life or you don&#8217;t.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Either God controls sanctification, or <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?sourceid=navclient&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;rls=GGIH,GGIH:2007-02,GGIH:en&amp;q=Chaferianism\" title=\"Chaferianim\">the believer does<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Either you believe <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Total_depravity\" title=\"Total Depravity\">you are totally evil<\/a>, or you are a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Christian_perfection\" title=\"Perfectionism\">perfectionist<\/a>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Either you believe in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Penal_substitution\" title=\"Penal Substitutionary Atonement\">penal substitutionary atonement<\/a>, or the Cross is irrelevant.<\/li>\n<li>Either you believe in following rules, or you believe in license.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These are no different than the pesky question: &#8220;How long have you been beating your wife?&#8221; Any attempt at nuance or explanation is dismissed as unorthodox. In essence, Fundamentalism is just not comfortable with Both-Ands:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I can both please God and please myself. I must please God above all.<\/li>\n<li>Grace is both irresistible and I&#8217;m compelled to express it.<\/li>\n<li>When you are redeemed, God is Lord of your life. You don&#8217;t &#8220;let&#8221; Him do anything.<\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Murray_%28theologian%29\" title=\"John Murray\">I work because God works<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>I am both full of sin and\u00a0totally unable to save myself <em>and<\/em> a redeemed\u00a0and wholly loved child of the King.<\/li>\n<li>Christ both took my punishment and gives me <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.monergism.com\/thethreshold\/articles\/bio\/timkeller.html\" title=\"Timothy Keller\">a new story to tell to the world<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?hl=en&amp;rls=GGIH%2CGGIH%3A2007-02%2CGGIH%3Aen&amp;q=Augustine+%22love+God+and+do+what+you+want%22\" title=\"Augustine\">Love God and do what you want<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Again, I&#8217;ve done <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Romancing-Difference-University-Religious-Fundamentalism\/dp\/1602580030\/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1195087780&amp;sr=8-1\" title=\"Romancing the Difference\">my best at creating a casuistic frame of acceptance that would resonate within the ethic of Fundamentalism<\/a>. I think it&#8217;s clear that those efforts failed. It&#8217;s just too brittle of a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?hl=en&amp;rls=GGIH%2CGGIH%3A2007-02%2CGGIH%3Aen&amp;q=%22frame+of+rejection%22\" title=\"Kenneth Burke's Frame of Rejection\">frame of rejection<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yes, we all know that Fundamentalism reads things as black and white.
