Jeremiah 17<\/a><\/h4>\n

1-2<\/span> “Judah’s sin is engraved with a steel chisel,
\nA steel chisel with a diamond point\u2014
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0engraved on their granite hearts,
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0engraved on the stone corners of their altars.
\nThe evidence against them is plain to see:
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0sex-and-religion altars and sacred sex shrines
\nAnywhere there’s a grove of trees,
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0anywhere there’s an available hill.<\/p>\n

3-4 <\/span>“I’ll use your mountains as roadside stands
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0for giving away everything you have.
\nAll your ‘things’ will serve as reparations
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0for your sins all over the country.
\nYou’ll lose your gift of land,
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The inheritance I gave you.
\nI’ll make you slaves of your enemies
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0in a far-off and strange land.
\nMy anger is hot and blazing and fierce,
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and no one will put it out.”<\/p>\n

5-6 <\/span>God’s Message:\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0“Cursed is the strong one
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0who depends on mere humans,
\nWho thinks he can make it on muscle alone
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and sets God aside as dead weight.
\nHe’s like a tumbleweed on the prairie,
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0out of touch with the good earth.
\nHe lives rootless and aimless
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0in a land where nothing grows.\u00a0<\/p>\n

7-8 <\/span>“But blessed is the man who trusts me, God,
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the woman who sticks with God.
\nThey’re like trees replanted in Eden,
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0putting down roots near the rivers\u2014
\nNever a worry through the hottest of summers,
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0never dropping a leaf,
\nSerene and calm through droughts,
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0bearing fresh fruit every season.\u00a0<\/p>\n

9-10 <\/span>“The heart is hopelessly dark and deceitful,
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0a puzzle that no one can figure out.
\nBut I, God, search the heart
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and examine the mind.
\nI get to the heart of the human.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0I get to the root of things.
\nI treat them as they really are,
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0not as they pretend to be.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

11 <\/span>Like a cowbird that cheats by laying its eggs
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0in another bird’s nest
\nIs the person who gets rich by cheating.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0When the eggs hatch, the deceit is exposed.
\nWhat a fool he’ll look like then!\u00a0<\/p>\n

12-13 <\/span>From early on your Sanctuary was set high,
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0a throne of glory, exalted!
\nO God, you’re the hope of Israel.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0All who leave you end up as fools,
\nDeserters with nothing to show for their lives,
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0who walk off from God, fountain of living waters\u2014
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and wind up dead!\u00a0<\/p>\n

14-18 <\/span>God, pick up the pieces.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Put me back together again.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0You are my praise!
\nListen to how they talk about me:
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0“So where’s this ‘Word of God’?
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0We’d like to see something happen!”
\nBut it wasn’t my idea to call for Doomsday.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0I never wanted trouble.
\nYou know what I’ve said.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It’s all out in the open before you.
\nDon’t add to my troubles.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Give me some relief!
\nLet those who harass me be harassed, not me.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Let them be disgraced, not me.
\nBring down upon them the day of doom.
