And thanks to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tulipgirl.com\/\" title=\"Tulip Girl\">TulipGirl<\/a>, I&#8217;ve found <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.covenantradio.com\/\" title=\"Covenant Radio\">a new source for downloads<\/a>. In this <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.covenantradio.com\/#\" title=\"Mark Horne\">first<\/a> (for me!)\u00a0podcast, a little factoid popped up that can be a compelling retort to some who say I&#8217;m a little too optimistic about the Christian life. \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n<p>You know <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Old_100th\" title=\"Old 100th\">Old Hundreth<\/a>, right? The first stanza looks like this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>All people that on earth do dwell,<br \/>\nSing to the Lord with cheerful voice.<br \/>\nHim serve with <em>fear<\/em>, His praise forth tell;<br \/>\nCome ye before Him and rejoice.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s based on Psalm 100, of course. But notice\u00a0the stark change between <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cyberhymnal.org\/bio\/k\/e\/kethe_w.htm\" title=\"William Kethe\">William Kethe<\/a>&#8216;s words and David&#8217;s:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>1 Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth!<br \/>\n2 Serve the LORD with <em>gladness<\/em>!<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0 Come into his presence with singing!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Uh. . . . Those two don&#8217;t match. Why? Why did Kethe change it? We serve with <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/cf.blueletterbible.org\/lang\/lexicon\/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=H08057&amp;Version=kjv\" title=\"Simach\">gladness<\/a>\u00a0&#8212; mirth, joy! <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cpdl.org\/wiki\/index.php\/Psalm_100\" title=\"Vulgate\">The Vulgate<\/a> chose <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.archives.nd.edu\/cgi-bin\/wordz.pl?keyword=laetitia\" title=\"Laetitia\">l\u00e6t\u00edtia<\/a>.\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cpdl.org\/wiki\/index.php\/Psalm_100\" title=\"Luther's Psalm 100\">Luther<\/a> uses <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/english.german-dictionary.net\/dict.cgi?query=Freuden&amp;plang=en&amp;db=tuc&amp;lang=0&amp;icase=1&amp;wholewords=0&amp;regexp=0&amp;hits=50&amp;matches=0\" title=\"Freuden\">Freuden<\/a>. And <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/genevanpsalter.redeemer.ca\/psalm_texts.htm#psalm100\" title=\"Genevan Psalter\">Calvin<\/a> is practically giddy!<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Shout joyfully to praise the Lord,<br \/>\nall you who dwell upon the earth.<br \/>\nWorship the Lord with happy heart;<br \/>\nbefore him come with songs of joy.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So I think the better, more historically astute question is, why did we all get so crabby? Optimism about the Gospel is a good thing and, I would argue, a <em>Biblical<\/em> thing.
