Technology boosts worship at Springwell church

The local paper brags about this church around the corner.

Flat-screen televisions, stage lighting and state-of-the-art sound systems greet visitors at Taylors’ Springwell Church, tipping them off that this place of worship isn’t a traditional one. This media-savvy church stays at the forefront of technology by the guiding hand of Sonny Gray, media and communications director.

Hmph. That something so artificial can “boost” worship. Our poor forebears. All they had was a Bible, their untrained voices, and prayer. Tsk-tsk. Well, and the Spirit. But where was the laser pointer?

A recent Springwell sermon foregrounds the classic Keswick mindset of the abundant life. It’s so twisted. This is contemporary Christianity. This is deviant. Instead of lambasting devil chords and drum sets, we need to see this mindset for what it is: works-based righteousness.

Somebody needs to nail another 95 Theses to the door.
