Cakes vs. Wasps: A Red Velvet Showdown

2587.jpg versus velvet_ant.jpg

  • A WASPy urban legend recipe from the Waldorf Astoria vs. A wingless wasp
  • An Aunt’s favorite treat vs. An ant-like parasite that feasts on baby bees
  • One of my few wiki edits vs. One of the more popular “What’s that Bug?” entries
  • Actually chocolate cake vs. Actually has fur
  • Best eaten drowned in buttercream frosting vs. Best found after drowning the lawn with wading pool leftovers
  • Used to contain beets vs. Will be beaten with a Mommy’s pink mock-croc if it shows up again
  • Amount of red food coloring in recipe would kill a cow vs. Amount of pain inflicted from sting is rumored to kill a cow

  1. I grew up with both kinds of red velvets: the cake appeared at every church social, and the wasp on occasion in our pool or the yards I worked. I only difference b/t the is that one I always wanted to appear and the other I wished would dissapear.

On a nerd note, the sting of the “red velvet ant” actually won’t kill a cow. Or a person. The sting *is* very painful, but there’s no threat of death because the varmits are solitary. The only actual incident of death or animals or (typically very weak) humans come from South America, where a close cousin of the red velvet ant lives and occasionally attacks in swarms.

  2. I saw the male partner to this little lady in red today. Ew. Looks like he likes sunflowers. :p
