God’s Love for Us — First Sunday of Advent

We read:

We remember:

  • I Samuel 16:1-13
  • The Tree itself

We sing:

God’s command to love each other is required of every man.
Showing mercy to a brother mirrors his redemptive plan.
In compassion He has given of His love that is divine;
On the cross sins were forgiven; joy and peace are fully thine.

Come in praise and adoration, all who on Christ’s name believe.
Worship Him with consecration, grace and love will you receive.
For His grace give Him the glory, for the Spririt and the Word,
And repeat the gospel story till all men His name have heard.

  1. This morning was my first Sunday ever celebrating Advent in church. I LOVED it. Neither any of the IFB churches I grew up in, nor the Reformed Baptist church I attended the past several years ever did anything for Advent, though there were a few years when I did my own thing by myself at home (I was quite the little rebel!).

  2. Oh, Camille. I’m still detoxing from all the Bob Jones stuff and the IFB churches we attended. Bob Chest was our music director once, and he told me personally that he hated Christmas carols–they were just much too overused and overrated. It was such a weird feeling knowing that the carols were begrudgingly scheduled and sung. And we only sang Christmas carols for two weeks also. Today was hanging of the greens at our church that celebrates Advent. Next Sunday will be the cantata of which I will have a part. I love Christmas at church now. It is SO wonderful. And I see the focus on the story of Jesus and not on constant haranguing about how commercialized and materialistic Christmas is. Ours was a horrible departure from fundamentalism–but I am so glad now that it happened. I am starting to maybe love going to church a little bit and maybe starting to trust church people a little bit more. Maybe, maybe…… It’s all working out for good. This is helping me to see who God really is. I am understanding that in my 40+ years associated with Bob Jones and related churches that I actually saw very little of God’s working and even less of the compassion and love of Jesus. How really sad.
